World Englishes
English in its standard ‘native’ form(s) is fast becoming the world lingua franca of science, commerce, the mass media, and entertainment. As a result, its innovative uses and users have become significant in at least the following eleven fields: applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, critical linguistics, contrastive rhetoric, second language acquisition, traditional English studies, lexicography, mass communication studies, cultural studies, pragmatics, and text linguistics. Hi Oksana!
I read with pleasure your article. But still I am a little bit puzzled. I agree with you that there are many varieties of English and they all have some peculiarities. But what English must be taught in Ukrainian or Russian schools? You may answer “Standard English”, and I have nothing against it. But while being on my practice at school I noticed that pupils study American English. The book by Oksana Karpjuk offers a great deal of Americanisms and shortenings. But why? American English is only a little bit modernized and I must say violated language. Some grammar and pronunciation rules are really violated in American English. What do you think of this?
I agree with you, Dima. And I should say that this problem worries me much too. Besides, sometimes I think even about the English we’re studying at the University. The matter is that often we learn new words and phrases though they are rarely used in speech or are just archaisms. As the language is foreign sometimes it’s problematic for us to differentiate what phrases are frequently used and which ones are hardly ever spoken at all. So, the English we study is a bit bookish.
Thus, in order to go with the times we should change something in our education, search for new resources, find new literature, use new original handbooks, use modern technologies. It would be great to communicate with native speakers (The English), organize youth exchange projects, excursions etc. We shouldn't be afraid of innovations, as such things would be VERY useful for both students and teachers.
Do you agree?
Of course I agree with both of you.We should admit that we really have an great lack of communication with native speakers & because of it our speaking skills suffer a lot. But the question which I dwell on does not touch the matter of teaching English though it's a very important & even urgent problem. The aim of the this report is to introduce English in the context of the world's globalisation. English has all preconditions to become a global language, so-called lingua franca. that's a very interesting topic, is it?
Yes it is!! Thank you , Oksana, for a very interesting topic for discussion. I think it's cool. And English nowadays is really global language. I'm sure people in all countries should study English, because it is difficult to orient in today's world not knowing this language.
Oksana, you've chosen a really nice topic. Everybody knows that English is a global language. Irene was right saying that all people should learn it.
